| You may have
heard the term
“chartplotter” in regards to marine navigation.
These units
integrate GPS technology with an electronic navigational chart.
Chartplotters offer information about location, speed, and heading
which is essential in safe boating navigation. Some of these devices
work with both radar and sonar in order to provide boaters with a
wealth of other information. Chartplotter GPS systems aren’t
just
for commercial boats any more, either. There are models that are small
and versatile enough to be used by casual fishermen and ski boat
operators. GPS systems with chartplotter capabilities have been evolving over a number of years now. New models are being introduced all the time which include larger display screens, BlueChart Visions Cartography, high screen resolution, and powerful sounders. Garmin markets numerous models of chartplotters. You can also find excellent units made by Raymarine which offer extremely detailed resolution. Depending on what you’re looking for, there are numerous models to choose from. Some of the GPS units are only chartplotters or only fishfinders. You can, however, find combo devices which include both. If you have been fishing in the same areas for years now, you can probably get by with just a fishfinder which will be more cost-effective. However, if you like to navigate and fish in unfamiliar areas, you’ll want a combo to help you travel most efficiently. When searching for a fishfinder, you’ll need to consider the size of the screen, the power output, and the features. All fishfinders do is send out pulses of sound and then listen to their return. Besides giving you the capability of locating fish, you will also receive information about water depth, bottom composition, details about what is below. A plotter-sounder combo can be an excellent choice for both powerboaters and fishermen. To start with, you can save a lot of money by buying the two units combined instead of separately, because you’ll only be purchasing one screen and chassis. You also may like the fact that instead of having to learn how to operate two different units, you’ll only have to master one. Remember when choosing a screen size that it’s easier to read a larger screen when you’re out bouncing over the waves. |
